\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Monday.\u00a0 <\/span>Late in the afternoon I stepped outside and went to the mailbox to get the mail before going to the store.\u00a0 <\/span>I waved to my kind North Carolina neighbor who lives behind me.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>“You staying?” he asked, incredulously.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>I noticed he had his windows taped up.\u00a0 <\/span>He was talking to his neighbor, who had a pickup truck packed to the max with family belongings.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>My neighbor informed me that the big danger was tornadoes.\u00a0 <\/span>“Have you ever been through a hurricane?” he asked me.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI didn\u2019t know until this morning,\u201d I told him.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWhere have you been?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Perhaps I am not as in touch with things as I should be sometimes.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>On the way to the store I noticed very heavy traffic in the westerly direction, and surprising heavy traffic going east.\u00a0 <\/span>I stopped at a gas station to fill up both tanks of the Jag, which I felt like putting on the highway north and cruising for about ten or twenty hours.\u00a0 <\/span>Although I ran my credit card through, it took some discussion in the office to get the pump turned on.\u00a0 <\/span>A hostile young man using a pay phone walked rather close to me\u2014\u201cinvading my space\u201d\u2014whom I dismissed as a thug.\u00a0 <\/span>The thought occurred to me that with disaster looming for so many, the looters were already rejoicing, counting their loot already.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>A girl in the car on the other side of the pump said, \u201cMom, what kind of car is that?\u201d while looking over at me staring.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>A young woman pulled up at the pump behind me.\u00a0 <\/span>She hollered at me.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cYou take care of that car!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI will,\u201d I said, a little embarassed.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI bet your going to North Carolina,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cNo, I\u2019m staying, but I wish I was going to Tennessee,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
